| The OLYMPICS’ SOMETHING OLD, SOMETHING NEW more than lives up to its name by bringing together faithful recuts of 6 of their early 60s R&B and Pop smashes for labels like Demon, Arvee and Duo Disc and what were then six shining examples of mid 60s, Motown-influenced, danceable soul, including big early Northern Soul floor-fillers Mine Exclusively, Baby Do The Philly Dog, Secret Agents and their version of label mate Jackie Lee’s The Duck. The six recuts sound almost the same as the original versions, which is hardly surprising that the group personnel was almost identical on these sessions to the one that made them six-eight years earlier. They were also arranged and produced by the man who had done the same for the originals, Fred Smith. And the six ‘new’ cuts still offer an irresistible siren’s call to get up and party like it’s 1966. If you bought this on Mirwood, or on its UK Fontana release, you’ve probably been aching for a chance to retire that worn-out vinyl, and here’s your chance. | |||||||||||
