To launch the series we cast our net far and wide , the Avons from Nashville, the Goodees from Memphis, the Tren-teens from New Jersey, the Sherrys from Philadelphia, the Victorians from Los Angeles and Baby Jane & the Rockabyes from New York all feature, not forgetting a pre-fame track from Dolly Parton on which she sounds uncannily like the Shangri-Las. Eight years down the line, half of the tracks on this collection are unavailable on CD elsewhere. |

Drawn entirely from the Scepter/Wand family of labels, plus New York neighbours Musicor, this 30-tracker boasts the Shirelles, the Toys, Candy & the Kisses, the Shangri-Las, the Fawns, the Sonnettes and the Teardrops amongst a stack of others. Diane & Annita's 'A Groovy Kind Of Love' is the original version of the song, hitherto available only on a hideously rare French EP, while Barbara & Brenda prove that sometimes all that's needed to create a wall of sound are two voices and one guitar. At the time of release, ten of these tracks were previously unissued. |

Pride of place goes to Shirley Matthews & the Big Town Girls with three great sides produced by Bob Crewe, while his pal, songwriter Ellie Greenwich, shows up thinly disguised as the Meantime. A decade of Columbia femme-pop featuring artists as diverse as Doris Day, Laura Nyro and the sisters Franklin, Erma and Aretha. There's a strong Brill Building fell to this volume, with songwriters like Van McCoy, Greenwich & Barry, Bob Crewe, Bacharach & David, Mann & Weil, Shadow Morton and others all represented alongside four compositions from Goffin & King. Selections taped in Chicago (the Opals), Los Angeles (the Bootiques), Nashville (the Poppies) and Detroit (the Little Foxes) are included in the mix for added cosmopolitan colour and flavour. The once mysterious northern soul heroine Sandi Sheldon is interviewed in the booklet, while the glamorous trio clad in see-thru silver on the front cover are the Glories featuring Frankie Gearing. |

Also features 'Hang It Up' by Claudine Clark (in disguise as Joy Dawn) and Patrice Holloway, who crops up as lead singer of the Belles with a previously unissued track from the Mirwood vaults. The consensus seems to be that this is the best volume so far. The Goodees, purveyors of the gothic 'Jilted', were so thrilled to be featured on the cover that they threw a reunion party. |

Compiled by the "Golden Age" team almost entirely from the Hot 100, the "Early Girls" series is very different indeed to "Where The Girls Are", yet each volume is as essential to femme-pop buffs, especially those with a preference for familiar hits, light rock'n'roll and MOR, maybe with a little R & B on the side. |

Volume 1 features a fine clutch of pop princesses in Little Peggy March, Linda Scott, Janie Grant, Dodie Stevens, Skeeter Davis and Robin Ward, whose 'Wonderful Summer' is surely one of the most gorgeous records ever made. Obviously, the person who sequenced Robin between the equally ethereal Paris Sisters and the Murmaids is some kinda genius. Strange but true (she says): after recording ''Til', the Angels' lead vocalist, Linda Jansen, was abducted by aliens and had to be replaced. |

The Rev-Lons are the most famous act on this CD. And how famous is that? Not very. Of the 26 tracks featured, only eight have previously seen the light of day, released in the mid-60s on tiny logos like Garpax, Big Ben, Gaiety, Ed-Nel and Star-Burst. The rest are previously unissued recordings. You want rarities? You got 'em! The Rev-Lons get pride of place with six selections, including 'Whirlwind', a mock-Motown number with a Bo Diddley beat. That group aside, producer Gary Paxton is not readily associated with girl groups, but, given access to the Garpax tape vaults, compiler Alec Palao has discovered enough titles to fill a whole disc. Mary Saenz, Beverly Williams and the Fashionettes are among the other participants. The booklet contains a detailed essay plus some nice pictures and label shots. Verdict? A must for hardcore girl groupies and/or Paxton completists. |

Drawn entirely from the Challenge label of Los Angeles, this baby delivers six tracks by the Blossoms, five of them featuring lead vocals by Darlene Wright, soon to be renamed Darlene Love by Phil Spector. Fans of the Spector sound should dig Renee Medina, the Francettes and the Galens, the latter sounding so much like the Paris Sisters that I find it almost impossible to believe that Priscilla Paris wasn't doing a spot of moonlighting. Yvonne Carroll has a great voice, especially evident on 'How Long Must This Fool Pay', a Brenda Holloway-style number. Tracks by the Delicates, Donna Loren, Panda Berry, Dee Dee Young, Sister Rachel, Diane Maxwell and the Accents complete the package. |

This was Ace's first girl group compilation CD and has been in catalogue for quite some time. Julie & the Desires' title track is to die for, as are Annette's 'Better Be Ready' (from the movie How To Stuff A Wild Bikini), 'Bad Boy' by the Donays, 'Stop, Look And Listen' by Les Girls (a session group featuring Ellie Greenwich) and 'Don't Hurt Me' by Bernadette Carroll. You won't find the Chiffons' three inclusions on any other CD. In fact, that applies to about half the tracks here. |

Knowingly designed for cats who wolf down "Girls In The Garage" bootlegs for brunch, a trick bag full of all-girl bands, axe-backed babes and the like. Pride of place goes to Goldie & the Gingerbreads, the best-known guitar-totin' chick band of the 60s, with four cuts. The Girls, the Daughters Of Eve, the Harem and the Pandoras also play their own instruments (the booklet contains great photos to prove it), while the rest just sound like they do . . . probably. I love this CD. Well, I would, wouldn't I? |

Umpteen girl groups have topped the charts over the last forty years , never let it be forgotten that with 'Will You Love Me Tomorrow' the Shirelles were the first. They inspired the Fab Four, who included 'Baby It's You' and 'Boys' on their debut album, while Manfred Mann, Dave Berry, the Merseybeats and the Rockin' Berries all took versions of the group's songs into the UK charts. Their repertoire was also raided by seemingly every Brit girl from Dusty Springfield down. The Crystals, the Supremes, the Honey Cone, the Three Degrees, the Emotions, First Choice, En Vogue, TLC , they all owe a big debt to the Shirelles. Present day sensations Destiny's Child, for instance, might not exist were it not for Shirley, Doris, Beverly and Micki. As a single disc hits collection, the 32-track "The Best Of The Shirelles" must be impossible to beat, while "Lost And Found" caters for the connoisseur with many rare and exclusive cuts. |

Commencing with the gorgeous 'So I Can Love You' from 1969, Chicago's Emotions scored 13 hits on the soul chart before leaving the Volt label five years later. Find each and every one of them on "Chronicle: Greatest Hits". Tracks like 'Going On Strike', 'I Found My Man', 'Two Lovers', 'Take Me Back' and 'Boy, I Need You' all sound like they could have been hits too , find these on the "So I Can Love You / Untouched" twofer. "Songs Of Innocence And Experience" was to have been the title of the Emotions' third Volt album, but its release was twice cancelled. 32 years later Tony Rounce hit upon the idea of amending and expanding that lost album into a 23-track CD. With six previously unissued tracks and a further 11 new to UK CD, it's an Emotions essential. I wish some clever Dick would release a CD of the group's pre-Volt 45s. |

The CD closes with blistering versions of 'The Love Of My Man' and 'I Love The Way You Love' by Venetta Fields and Robbie Montgomery, respectively, recorded live in 1964 at the Club Imperial in St. Louis. Too R & B? OK , try the poppier '(Never More Will I Be) Lonely For You', 'Nobody Loves Me' and 'Not That I Recall', all of which sound like hit records that never were. Exciting group, the Ikettes. |

Patti LaBelle & the Bluebelles' pre-Atlantic recordings are under-rated in my book. Here they are in their entirety (I think) on one handy CD. Tracks like 'Academy Award', 'The Joke's On You' and 'Decatur Street' are the sound of early-60s Philadelphia defined. Patti has a very extreme and eccentric vocal style, which I happen to love. Curiously, this CD contains two versions of 'I Sold My Heart To The Junkman', neither of which features her on lead. |

Brenda Lee was one of the top female recording stars of the early 60s and had one of the greatest voices ever. When she pacted with Decca in May 1956 she was already a seasoned performer of some six years standing. Save for a couple of reasonable sellers in 1957, the little girl who sounded like the love child of Ray Charles and Edith Piaf had to wait until the decade turned for her career to explode. As 1959 melted into 1960 "Little Miss Dynamite" was hurtling towards the Top 10 with the gritty rocker 'Sweet Nothins', and by year's end had two chart-toppers under her belt. Eventually her Hot 100 tally would number 53. It's great to hear her growing up on these twofers comprising her first six LPs. |

To the fans of Sue Thompson, who scored her first hit in 1961 with 'Sad Movies (Make Me Cry)', she was a pop princess with a baby doll voice. Little did they know that she was a thrice-married mom who had been in showbiz since the late-40s. For four years the hits kept coming with 'Norman', 'Have A Good Time', 'James (Hold The Ladder Steady)' and 'Paper Tiger', most, like her chart debut, written by the great John D. Loudermilk. They're all here, along with some excellent LP tracks and 'It's Break-Up Time', 'Sweet Hunk Of Misery' and 'Walkin' My Baby', three cool stompers from '65. |

Of the three CDs the Chordettes have in the Ace catalogue, this 32-tracker is the one I recommend. They flew the flag for girl groups in the 50s, racking up 14 hits, each of which is here. The title is a bit misleading, perhaps, although tracks like 'A Girl's Work Is Never Done' and 'Charlie Brown' might qualify as rock'n'roll. I'd forgotten how good their records are. |

A little lady with a big voice, Sharon Tandy's recordings are the stuff of legend , 'Hold On' and 'Our Day Will Come', cut with the Fleur De Lys, are freakbeat collectables, while tracks like 'Toe Hold' and 'I Can't Get Over It' were produced by the great Tom Dowd. This CD collects almost all of Sharon's British releases (previously, she'd enjoyed a career as South Africa's answer to Helen Shapiro), along with five previously unissued tracks from her fabled Stax sessions. You gotta believe how much work went into pulling off a release like this. |

Featuring, as it does, the earliest recordings of various members of Bob B. Soxx & the Blue Jeans, the Girlfriends and the Blossoms, this is a fascinating release. The Dreamers modeled themselves on the McGuire Sisters, so if you like that close harmony style, this is recommended, but be aware that the girls sing on only 14 of the tracks here, and supply lead vocals to just three, those they cut as the Rollettes. The fact is they made criminally few waxings and were primarily background specialists. Originally a sextet, they debuted in 1954 as the Dreamers featuring Richard Berry. As a quartet, they continued recording with Berry until 1956, that material comprising the bulk of this CD. Jennell Hawkins joined them on lead vocals the next year, but stayed for just one 45, also included. By the end of 1957 they had changed their name to the Blossoms, but y'all knew that. |

Previously the editor of the fanzines That Will Never Happen Again and Philately (nothing to do with postage stamps, he insists), these days he is one of the collective that maintains http://www.spectropop.com. When not tied up with his day job, he compiles and annotates CDs for Ace Records and any other label that'll have him. His mother and grandmother were professional singers, which might explain a lot. |
