HOW TO BUY FUNK

So it's funk that you want eh? Well you've come to the right place. BGP has been in the groove now for almost 20 years , 18 to be exact , and if you were lucky enough to bowl up to the 100 Club in Oxford Street for the launch night you would have been handed a 12 inch single that, alongside Willis Jackson and Billy Hawks, provided you with Pucho's funk monster 'Got Myself A Good Man'. In those early days the funk was mainly from the jazz side of things. Other funky stuff came flying out on both Southbound and Stax; some of those fine releases are still available for your delectation.

Since the mid-90s a new sort of funk scene emerged from the enthusiasms of Keb Darge's Deep Funk club night. They had a deeper collector's attitude and wanted more information on obscurer and obscurer records. BGP and Ace have tried to keep our funk compilations a happy mixture between the obscure and the more widely celebrated. With our unrivalled access to more vaults than Raffles the gentleman thief we have unearthed our fair share of unreleased gems, including Billy Garner's now classic 'Brand New Girl'.

What we bring you below is our ultimate guide to buying funk on our labels. It's music to make you sweat.

Selected Releases
SUPER FUNK

The latest , so far , of our compilation series that grabs rare and collectable funk cuts from around the US and sequences them with an eye for the spectacular. Volume 4 had many great + collectable tunes on it. It opened with the brilliant Billy Garner tune 'I Got Some', from master tape, unlike the bootlegs. This is followed by the highly sought-after 'Deep Soul' by Ron Buford and also features the rare funk classic 'Party and Don't Worry Bout It' by the New Jersey Queens. Chet Ivey, the Soulsetters, E Rodney Jones and a bunch more sought-after 45s are collected alongside an incredible unreleased vesion of 'Get Me Back On Time, Engine # 9' by the National Soul Review. This is hot stuff.

FUNK SOUL SISTERS

Volume 1 of this gem of a series rounded up a bunch of wonderful funky soul cuts from female singers. The series returns on 29th August with an even better collection. Opening up with the wonderful 'Love Addict' by Honey & the Bees, one of the big discoveries on the funk scene in the last year or so, it then passes through a bunch of amazing tracks from Martha Reeves and the Vandellas, Patti Jo, Annette Snell and Harolyn Montgomery. One of the undisputed gems is 'Family Tree' by Little Rose Little, which had previously only appeared on an obscure sampler album on GWP.

STAX OF FUNK

Every now and then we like to give some of our favourite labels a funk once-over, with Stax we gave it a twice-over. This compilation simply crackles with high level funk electricty. From its opening salvo of Lee Sain's 'She's My Old Lady Too' it never lets up its sheer level of excitement. Rufus Thomas gets nasty with 'Funky Hot Grits', Mable John takes on Ashford and Simpson's 'Running Out' and Little Sonny invents funk harmonica on 'Eli's Pork Chop'. For those who thought that Kim Weston was a sweet Detroit soulstress 'Brothers And Sisters Get It Together' shows she can get down.

FATBACK BAND

This album defined the Fatback band as one of the finest purveyors of mid-70s New York street funk. Tracks like 'Wicky Wacky' , a big influence on reggae , 'Keep On Steppin'' and 'Mr Bass Man' would cost you an arm and a leg if they were by an obscure band on a tiny label. Southbound's catalogue contains all the Fatback Band's recordings made for the Spring and Event labels, as well as a wonderful collection of the recordings from Fatback founder Bill Curtis' own Fatback label on Kent. The Fatback Band still regularly play gigs all over the world, which cook furiously , catch them whenever you can.

FUNKADELIC

George Clinton's band of mad Funkateers reached peak velocity with this, their third album for Westbound. With guitarist Eddie Hazel at his devastating best, the title track is one of the great guitar solos. Cuts such as 'Hit It And Quit It' and 'Can You Get To That' show what you can achieve with some great vocals and a wicked imagination. Our Funkadelic reissue series combines high quality sound reproduction with some incredible booklet notes and images.

SOUTHERN FUNKIN'

This isn't part of any series, but is a kicking slice of the sort of black music that was being made in Louisiana from the late 60s through the 70s. Highlights include the £1000 rarity 'One Day' by Tabby Thomas and the wonderful soul sound of Johnny Truitt's 'No Sad Times' Not to say that a line up that includes brilliance by the likes of Chester Randle's Soul Senders, African Music Machine, Eddie Giles or the scarey 'Hell Or High Water' by Katie Webster doesn't have a lot more going for it. Special.
